Class 10 Political Science Chapter 3 Question 1 :
Discuss three factors that determine the outcomes of politics of social divisions.

Answer :
1. First of all, the outcome depends on how people perceive their identities. If people see their identities in singular and exclusive terms, it becomes very difficult to accommodate. It is much easier if the people see that their identities are multiple and are complementary with the national identity.
2. Second, it depends on how political leaders raise the demands of any community. It is easier to accommodate demands that are within the constitutional framework and are not at the cost of another community.

3. Third, it depends on how the government reacts to demands of different groups. As we saw in the examples of Belgium and Sri Lanka, if the rulers are willing to share power and accommodate the reasonable demands of minority community, social divisions become less threatening for the country. But if they try to suppress such a demand in the name of national unity, the end result is often quite the opposite. Such attempts at forced integration often sow the seeds of disintegration.

Class 10 Political Science Chapter 3 Question 2 :
When does a social difference become a social division?
Answer :

Social division takes place when some social difference overlaps with other differences. The difference between the Blacks and Whites becomes a social division in the US because the Blacks tend to be poor, homeless and discriminated against.
In our country Dalits tend to be poor and landless. They often face discrimination and injustice. Situations of this kind produce social divisions, when one kind of social difference becomes more important than the other and people start feeling that they belong to different communities

How do social divisions affect politics? Give two examples.

Answer :
Social division affect politics negatively as well as positively . Both the impacts are explained below :

If this competition is based on the existing social division, it will lead to conflicts, violence or even disintegration of the country. For example Northern Ireland faced such situation for many years. Similarly, Yugoslavia broke into six independent countries because of politics of social division.

2. Positive Impacts :
a) Political parties would talk about social divisions, make different promises to different communities , look after due representation of various communities and male policies to redress the grievances of the disadvantaged communities.
b) Social divisions affect voting in some countries . People from one country tend to prefer some party more than others.
