A Determiner is defined as a word or phrase of Word which is used in  before the noun to define its meaning. Generally , A determiners functions like an adjective.

Types of Determiners

Determiners can be divided into following categories:

  • Articles
  • Demonstratives
  • Possessives
  • Indefinite Adjectives

Articles : a , an , the

i) a/an (Indefinite Article)
Determiners ‘a/an’ is used before a singular countable noun. Example A boy, a unit.
Important Note : ‘an’ is used before the singular countable noun whose word sounds like a vowel . Example : An apple

  • ‘a’  not used before a word whose staring word sounds like a vowel. Example a M.L.A  (wrong), an M.L.A  (Right)
  • a/an’ are not used before the adjective which is used without the countable noun. Example : He is an honest  (Wrong)He is honest  (Right)He is an honest boy . (Right)
  • ‘a/an’ are used before the adjective followed by a noun. Example : She is an Honest lady. She is a pretty lady
  • a/an’ are not used before uncountable noun

ii) The’ (Definite Article)

  • ‘The’ is used before proper noun (for making comparison)
  • ‘The’ is used before mountain ranges, religious books, name of countries, natural phenomenon, name of rivers, hills mountains, oceans ,etc Example : The Ganga, The Ramayana
  • ‘The’ is used before singular countable noun.
  • ‘The’ is used before a noun which is made definite by a phrase or a clause.

Demonstratives

Demonstratives points to a particular thing, person, place, etc . Example This, That , Those, These.
Demonstrative Determiners Examples –

  • Those men are  politicians.
  • This  is my pencil.
  • These books are mine .
  • That bag is not yours.

Possessives Determiners

We use possessives when we have to denote the things which belong to someone . Example : his , my , their ,your , etc

• Give my book.
• It’s my lunch box.
• Suman’s brother is very weak.
• Her  friends are making noise.
