The full form of SDM is Sub Divisional Magistrate. A Sub Divisional Magistrate is a state civil servant.

An SDM is sometime the official head of district subdivision and administrative officer of a particular district.

An SDM is also known as Deputy Collector or Assistant Collector. In some states , SDM is also known as Assistant Commissioner.

Works and Duties of Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM)

An SDM takes charges of a subdivisions of a district known as ‘tehsils’. An SDM have various duties and several executive and magisterial roles. The work of an SDM are mentioned below.

Revenue Functions : An SDM performs the revenue functions. Revenue functions involve maintenance of land records , solving of revenue cases, do settlement operations of public land. He carry out the demarcation and mutation of the lands.

He manages the day to day revenue work. Girdavars, Patwaries, Tehsildars and other revenue staff official help the SDM to carry out the revenue functions . An SDM also responsible for issuing of various certificates like – caste certificate, domicile, ration cards, etc.

Magisterial Functions : In the Magisterial Functions, An SDM uses powers of Executive Magistrate. They are responsible for operating preventive sections of code of criminal procedure.

The SDM is also take care of the incidents like riots , fires, natural calamities, etc in the area. He keeps an eye over the crowd places during the festivals, emergencies ,etc

Disaster Management : An SDM is given the primary responsibility for relief and rehabilitation operations in any calamity whether natural or man-made.

How to become SDM Officer ?

To become an SDM Officer following steps are followed.

  • A candidate must fulfill the minimum educational and eligibility criteria.
  • The candidate must satisfy the age limit.
  • The candidate then have to appear for the Prelims examination.
  • After Clearing the Prelims examinations, the candidate will have to clear the mains examination.
  • Those candidate who pass the prelims and mains examination are called for interview.
  • A final list is prepared. The shortlisted candidates are placed in different department in government department at various posts out of which one is SDM (Sub Divisional magistrate )

Educational Qualification : The minimum educational qualification for an SDM is a graduation degree in any discipline.

Nationality : The applicant must be Indian.

Age Limit :The age limit for the post of SDM for General category is 21 years to 40 years and for OBC /SC/ST it is 21 years to 45 years.

SDM Examination Details and Exam Pattern

Pre Exam : A Preliminary Examinations consist of two papers of MCQ Type which makes it of 200 marks . The candidate have to pass both the papers to be eligible for mains exam.

Prelims Exam Pattern – Paper 1 consists of the question of the areas – history, science, current affairs, politics, geography while paper 2 is a analytical and logical based question paper. It also contains questions from English and maths.

Mains Examination : To be eligible for the Mains exams, one has to clear the prelims examination. The mains exam consist of 9 paper out of which one is an essay paper, 4 subject paper and other two optional subject papers.

Each of the nine papers are of 3 hours. These papers are descriptive type papers.

Interview : Those candidates who have qualified the prelims and mains , are eligible to appear for the interview of 200 marks. After interview is conducted, a final list is published.

The qualified candidates get the department as per their ranking in the merit list.

Note : A general candidate can give only 6 attempts for the examination. ( may vary for different caste category)
